Part of the Conservation Series

In Not Yet Gone, two endangered lives share a moment of quiet proximity: Harmon, a white rhino at our own Henry Vilas Zoo, and a Rusty Patched Bumblebee hovering above his smaller horn.

Harmon anchors the piece as a living ambassador for a species facing extinction through poaching and habitat loss. Above him, the bumblebee, a federally endangered Midwest native represents local action and fragile hope. Their shared space suggests that global and local conservation are not separate struggles, but intertwined threads in the fabric of ecological care.

The muted palette and soft tonal transitions create a sense of quiet urgency. A stillness before action. The title is both warning and promise: these creatures remain, for now.

And that "for now" is everything.

We're invited to reflect not just on what's lost, but on what can still be saved.

As Judy Cardin reminds us, "We may not be able to save the White Rhino in our backyards, but we can save the Rusty Patched Bumblebee."
